Cancer Support Massage:

Receive the supportive, holistic bodywork, employing massage techniques suitable for individuals undergoing treatment or for those who are post-treatment and/or surgery. Tuesdays, 10-3pm

massage for older adults (geriatric)

The JCC Health Club now offers massages for older adults using a special table that safely lowers you down for easy access. This modified massage can decrease incidence of injuries, increase flexibility, provide pain relief, and improve circulation. Our techniques are suitable for individuals undergoing treatment or who are post-treatment/surgery. Seniors 62+ years receive a 10% discount on all massages!

Reflexology

Involves application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body.

Myofascial Release

Refers to the manual massage technique for stretching the fascia and releasing bonds between fascia, integument, and muscles with the goal of eliminating pain, increasing range of motion and equilibrioception. Myofascial release usually involves applying shear compression or tension in various directions, or by skin rolling.

Thai Massage

Combines both physical and energetic aspects. It is a deep, full-body massage progressing from the feet up, and focusing on sen or energy lines throughout the body, with the aim of clearing blockages in these lines, and thus stimulating the flow of blood and lymph throughout the body. It draws on yoga, acupressure and reflexology.

Sports Massage

also known as manual therapy, manipulative therapy, or manual & manipulative therapy, this is a physical treatment primarily used on the neuromusculoskeletal system to treat pain and disability. It most commonly includes kneading and manipulation of muscles, joint mobilization and joint manipulation.

Shiatsu (指圧)

(shi meaning finger and atsu meaning pressure) is a type of alternative medicine consisting of the fingers and palm pressure, stretches, and other massage techniques. There is no convincing data available to suggest that shiatsu is an effective treatment for any medical condition.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

A gentle massage which is intended to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart. Manual lymph drainage uses a specific amount of pressure and rhythmic circular movements to stimulate lymph flow.

Alec Menge
Available: Tuesdays 10-3pm
Alec sincerely believes in the physiological benefits of massage, as well as the psychological benefits. It has been proven to reduce pain and increase range of motion as well as reduce stress and anxiety. Alec hopes to be able to bring positive results to both the physical and mental state of his clients. Through Alec’s extensive 9 years of Chi Gung and Tai Chi training, he has the calmness of mind necessary to give a massage, be present in the moment and alert to his client’s reaction to the work. He listens to the client’s body and responds accordingly, using techniques ranging from Swedish, Deep Tissue and Reflexology that he thinks will be most effective in the session.

Angela Aiello

Angela graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York City, Angela believes in the body's ability to heal itself and that massage therapy is one of the many paths to restoring health and wholeness to the body. Her style is a combination of the most enjoyable elements of Swedish, Deep Tissue, Reflexology, Craniosacral, and with an intuitive use of gentle stretches and acupressure points, Angela's massage is deeply restorative, nurturing and refreshing.

Ben’s intentions derive simply from your need, being mindful about using techniques that can be effective and within the range of comfort. With over 30 years of experience specializing in massage, he uses a combination of specific deep tissue work and medium to firm pressures when it is called for.

Damon Baram
Available Monday 3-8pm, Thursday 9-2p
Damon Baram brings a unique and diverse background to the JCC massage therapy department. He is a graduate of the prestigious Swedish Institute college of Health Science with a degree in massage. He is also a graduate of the Pacific College of Oriental medicine with a degree in Traditional Chinese medicine. Damon holds two NY State licenses in both Acupuncture and massage therapy. He also has specialized training in Tui Na (Chinese medical massage ) and Chinese Herbal medicine. Damon's practice is focused in treating a wide range of orthopedic pain disorders. As a massage therapist he has a big tool box to choose from. His massage modalities are: medical massage, Tui Na, Reflexology, Swedish, Shaistu and Positional Release. Let his healing hands ease your pain.

Doreen Ashley

Doreen worked as a computer graphic artist for 16 years. As the world changed her desire to do something more organic and personal became more important. A graduate of the Swedish Institute, she believes the client's body will tell us what it needs to heal. As a massage therapist, if we are willing to listen and respect the body's wisdom, we can act as facilitator of healing and well-being. Each client is different and deserves an individualized massage session that speaks to their needs. While working with a client Doreen creates a safe and relaxed atmosphere where she can begin the task of healing the body with modalities such as: Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Manipulation, Range of Motion (ROM), Trigger Point and Stretching.

Douglas Chu
Available Sunday 9-2pm
Douglas is a graduate of the Swedish Institute. He has been in the massage field for over 10 years. He has worked in the gym arena such as Equinox Fitness clubs and NYSC as well as the hotel environment such as Waldorf Astoria, Trump Soho, Cornelia Spa at the Surrey hotel. His massage is a combination of deep tissue, Swedish, passive-stretching and pressure points. Douglas tends to attract the clientele that gears more towards a sports/medical massage. Of course, each massage is customized to the client’s specific needs including a relaxing Swedish massage. His massage education is ongoing basis even before it became a mandatory NYS law. He has completed courses in Abdomen Massage, Sports Massage, Oncology Massage, Medical Massage, Myofascial Release, Craniosacral, Ortho-Bionomy, BodyTalk and Reiki.

Ellen Wertheim
Available Tuesday 10-3pm
Ellen is the Clinical Director of Oncology Massage at JCC Manhattan’s Cancer Care Massage Program, which she proudly helped build. She is a certified member of Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals, and specializes in oncology massage, restorative relaxation massage, and palliative and hospice care. In a supportive environment, and away from the rigors of medical care, Ellen’s massage is focused on decreasing stress, relieving pain, improving range of motion, aiding sleep and appetite, and mitigating other side effects of treatments. Ellen is a graduate of NYC’s esteemed Swedish Institute, College of Health Sciences (2009), holds certification in oncology massage and infant massage, has additional training in Tuina (Chinese massage) and Reflexology foot massage, and is a former medical technician and non-profit administrator. Committed to the healing arts and creativity, Ellen has also been a painter and textile designer for more than thirty years. She brings a collaborative and holistic approach to both massage work and her art, drawing on the miracles and breadth of nature and the human spirit, to which she bears witness with every client she has the privilege to work with.

Hector is a highly skilled, enthusiastic massage therapist with over a decade of experience practicing massage. Since graduating from the prestigious Swedish Institute, he has worked in many high end spas throughout New York City . Hector maintains excellent knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and is well versed in massage modalities such as Swedish, Deep Tissue, Medical ,Trigger Point work ,Myofascial Release and Sports massage. He's attentive to his clients needs and develops personalized treatments for them to optimize their health and well being.

Ivan Garay

Ivan Garay graduated from the Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy, The oldest school of massage therapy in the country. He has over 16 years experience in his field. During his career he has worked at prestigious 5-star hotels like the Four Seasons Hotel, Plaza Hotel and the Carlyle Hotel. Over his career, Ivan has consistently dedicated himself to learning and improving his skills. He has certifications in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Craniosacral Therapy, Myoskeletal Alignment, Kinesio-taping, Orthopedic Massage, etc. Ivan's philosophy is that every person is unique with a unique set of needs and is seeking a specific type of care. The key to a good session is identifying what those needs are and doing your best to meet them. He uses his skills and experience to customize every session for his clients/patients.

Loretta Samuels
Available every other Sunday 2-7pm
Loretta is a graduate of the Swedish Institute and has been massaging for almost 20 years.. Her massage background incorporates Swedish, Shiatsu, Pre-M+Natal, and some training in Cranio-Sacral and Reflexology. Upon her graduation from the Swedish Institute,she worked in several hotels and day spas providing massage and body treatments, e.g. hot stone, body scrubs, body wraps, etc. I have worked with the Jewish Community Center (JCC) since November 2007. The clients at JCC know exactly what they want and need to enhance the massage experience and Loretta tailors each client’s areas of concerns by customizing her strokes . Some of the benefits of receiving massage treatment are: assists in reducing muscle tension and stress, promotes relaxation, improves circulation and supports overall health and wellness.

Odalis Melendez

Dalis has over 5 years experience as a licensed therapist. Massage has always been a passion of hers and it wasn't until she was injured did she realize the true benefits of massage. Once healed, Dalis decided it was a practice she wanted to specialize in and help clients that may be suffering and aid in the homeopathic road of healing the mind, body and soul. Dalis continues to educate herself in new modalities, techniques, pathologies to serve her clients with the best possible outcome. Dalis takes pride in her work because helping one feel less stressed, regenerating muscle tissue to avoid injury, relieving someone's pain is a reward in itself. Rachim Baskin

Rachim is a graduate of the Swedish Institute with over 30 years of massage experience. He has been a massage instructor for the past ten years. Rachim uses his sessions not only to help ease the aches and pains of his clients but to educate them on their ailments and help find ways to reduce or eliminate the issues. He focuses on trying to find just the right amount and style of pressure for each client, each time, with lots of detailed work. A refreshed face afterwards tells me more than words do.

A Graduate of the Swedish Institute and massage therapist since 2012, Theresa’s mission is to provide her clients with peace, relaxation, and well-being through the healing power of massage. She will tailor a massage therapy treatment to the client's individual needs using her tool box of Swedish, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Pre-Natal, and Myofascial Release..
