Saving the Fire: A Special Mindfulness Mini-Retreat for 20's + 30's
Jean Cocteau was asked, "If your house was on fire, what would be the one thing you would save?" "The fire," he replied. We all have disasters, upheavals, traumas, and "fires" in our lives. Mindfulness is a transformative tool for understanding how these fires can be the deepest teachers in our lives, helping us relate to ourselves and others with greater ease, compassion, and wisdom. This mini retreat will provide an introduction to mindfulness and sitting and walking meditation. Most of the afternoon will be spent in silent practice. Train Your Brain, For Happiness and More
Science now tells us we can train our brain through easy-to-do games and exercises, and millions seem to agree, as people flock to training websites and offline practices like mindfulness. How might this work for you? ABC News co-anchor Dan Harris, author of 10% Happier, explores this subject with Dr. Richard J. Davidson, Founder of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds (CIHM) at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison and author with Sharon Begley of The Emotional Life of Your Brain. This evening is presented by our friends at mindful.org and co-sponsored by The Garrison Institute. Dr. Richard J. Davidson is a renowned neuroscientist and one of the world's leading experts on the impact of contemplative practices, such as meditation, on the brain. He is involved in research on the impact that training children and adults in healthy qualities of the mind, such as compassion, altruism, forgiveness, mindulness and well-being, has on emotional reactivity, the quality of attention, and on the brain itself. Dan Harris is a co-anchor of Nightline and the weekend edition of Good Morning America. Dan regularly reports for 20/20 and World News with Diane Sawyer. His book has been on the NY Times bestseller list and Dan was recently here at the JCC to talk about his "skeptical journey" with his friends and teachers, Sharon Salzberg, Mark Epstein and Joseph Goldstein. A podcast of that program can be found on the JCC website. (more)REGISTER

A Partner in Holiness: Deepening Mindfulness, Practicing Compassion and Enriching our Lives
An Event in Honor of Rabbi Jonathan Slater's New Book, A Partner in Holiness: Deepening Mindfulness, Practicing Compassion and Enriching Our Lives through the Wisdom of R. Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev's Kedushat Levi Find inspiration for a satisfying life of spiritual practice through the combination of contemporary mindfulness meditation and classical Hasidic spirituality. Rabbi Jonathan P. Slater, mindfulness meditation instructor at the JCC since 2002 and Co-Director of Programs at the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, has published two volumes of selections from the beloved Hasidic text Kedushat Levi, by R. Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev in translation with commentaries. Through these teachings he opens up the possibility of developing a life of spiritual practice which will wake us up to the wonders of the world, help us nurture a heart of compassion and sustain us in times of trouble. Through conversation with Rabbi Michael Strassfeld, of the Society for the Advancement of Judaism and former instructor in Makom, he will bring some of the key themes of R. Levi Yitzhak’s teachings, and share a practice with us to prepare for the coming holiday of Hanukkah. Co-sponsored by the Institute for Jewish Spirituality. The event will be followed by a reception and book signing. (more)REGISTER
