People's Climate March: Join the Largest Climate March in History
On September 21, world leaders will gather in New York City for a UN summit on the climate crisis. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution. With our future on the line and the whole world watching, we'll take a stand to bend the course of history. We'll take to the streets to demand the world we know is within our reach: a world with an economy that works for people and the planet; a world safe from the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities. The march begins at 11:30 am, following a pre-approved route from Columbus Circle to the Javits Center. After you register, you will receive detailed information on the exact meet-up location near Columbus Circle, which will be at approximately 10:30 am on Sunday September 21.Click here to register to march with the 20´s & 30´s volunteer corps. There will also be programs before and/or after the march for families, teens, and adults of all ages at the JCC and throughout the Upper West Side.Visit peoplesclimate.org for more information about the People's Climate March and to see a schedule of related events around the city. Literacy and Math Tutoring Programs
Join a dedicated group of volunteers and make a difference in the lives of NYC public school students. Volunteers commit to tutoring one hour (or more!) per week from October though May. JCC tutoring programs take place Monday-Friday and meet during school, after school, and in the evening. You can pick the program that is of interest to you and fits your schedule. We offer highly structured after school programs, including the Gift of Literacy program, Gift of Math program, Graduate program, and Evening Tutoring program, as well as less structured programs, such as Lunchtime Reading Buddies, Classroom Assistants, and One-on-One Academic Tutors. JCC tutors work primarily with elementary school students, although we also offer opportunities to tutor at the high school level.Volunteers need to fill out an application and attend an orientation session before getting started. Orientations take place at the JCC in September and October with additional sessions scheduled as needed. Tutoring takes place at several Upper West Side public schools. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older and can apply year-round. No previous tutoring experience is necessary. To learn more or register for an upcoming orientation session, email Emily at enordpod@jccmanhattan.org (more)LEARN MORE
