The Doctor Is In Series
Amanda Sacks, PhD–Assistant Professor of Neuropsychology in Neurosurgery, Weill Cornell Medical College In our world of constant distractions, feeling forgetful and unfocused in our personal and work lives is inevitable, especially as we age–or is it? Hear from a neuropsychology expert about the role of attention in brain functioning. Dr. Sacks will discuss brain networks and how the domains of cognitive functioning work so that we can understand why most of us overestimate how much information we actually perceive and retain. Lay the groundwork for increased cognitive self–awareness by learning attention-training exercises to help engage your brain and achieve an internal state of focus. Don’t miss this chance to retrain your brain. (more)REGISTER

Train Your Brain, For Happiness and More
Science now tells us we can train our brain through easy-to-do games and exercises, and millions seem to agree, as people flock to training websites and offline practices like mindfulness. How might this work for you? ABC News co-anchor Dan Harris, author of 10% Happier, explores this subject with Dr. Richard J. Davidson, Founder of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds (CIHM) at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison and author with Sharon Begley of The Emotional Life of Your Brain. This evening is presented by our friends at mindful.org and co-sponsored by The Garrison Institute and the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds CIHM). Dr. Richard J. Davidson is a renowned neuroscientist and one of the world's leading experts on the impact of contemplative practices, such as meditation, on the brain. He is involved in research on the impact that training children and adults in healthy qualities of the mind, such as compassion, altruism, forgiveness, mindulness and well-being, has on emotional reactivity, the quality of attention, and on the brain itself. Dan Harris is a co-anchor of Nightline and the weekend edition of Good Morning America. Dan regularly reports for 20/20 and World News with Diane Sawyer. His book has been on the NY Times bestseller list and Dan was recently here at the JCC to talk about his "skeptical journey" with his friends and teachers, Sharon Salzberg, Mark Epstein and Joseph Goldstein. A podcast of that program can be found on the JCC website. (more)REGISTER
