What is 2s Together?

2s Together is a two-hour, twice-weekly classroom experience for 2-year-olds*. Our educational approach is child-centered and play-based, and is inspired by a variety of progressive educational philosophies. Our classroom teachers create safe and loving environments where children can explore, socialize, and grow in this first separation experience.

*Some class sections are designated for children who will be turning 2 years old in October, November, or early December. If you have questions about appropriate placement for your child, please be in touch.

Can you tell me about class size, ratios, and the teachers?

We have up to 10 children and three teachers in each of our classrooms. Each teaching team has a lead teacher who has earned a master’s degree in early childhood or a related field, or who has significant classroom teaching experience with 2s. Our assistant or associate teachers might be working toward an advanced degree or have prior classroom experience with this age or other related childcare experience with 2s. We create a trio of teachers for each classroom so that their experiences, skills, and personalities will blend beautifully and complement one another.

What happens during the two hours of class?

So much! Children will sing hello and welcome one another by name; engage in open play and exploration that the teachers create based on emerging curriculum; share circle time with songs, stories, movement, or more; visit the gym (for instructed play with JCC coaches or open play) and/or the rooftop playground; enjoy a healthy snack, and then finally sing good-bye.

Is there Jewish content?

Just as we are inspired by progressive educational philosophies, our 2s curriculum is inspired by Jewish themes/symbols at various points during the year. Teachers will draw on upcoming holidays to inform curricular explorations. For example, Chanukah can be a chance to explore light and darkness, create art with sheets of beeswax or paint with candles or dreidels, or sing songs connected to the holiday. Passover time may involve examinations of matzah and bread, playing with sand and pyramid shapes in the sensory bin, or making charoset together.

How do I sign up?

Registration for the program opens according to the Family Life registration calendar. There is no application process for 2s Together; families register on a first come, first served basis for the season. Although we look at the program as a yearlong experience, from the beginning of September to the end of May (or sometimes early June), families register for one season at a time. Your child's spot from the fall is guaranteed for the winter/spring season, and we will add new children to the program in the second semester via a wait list lottery process to fill available slots.

Can I visit before signing up?

Absolutely! Just reach out to Yael (ykahnpinto@mmjccmanhattan.org) to schedule a time to come by and see the program in action, or to be able to see the classroom spaces. We're happy to show off our program!
