"The canary, I said, comes and sits
on our table in the morning
at breakfast, I mean walks about
on the table with us there
and pecks at the tablecloth"

Images—such as this one, from a William Carlos Williams poem—speak to our senses. Their magic is their capacity to hold feeling, and to connect us to individual moments. In this workshop we will engage in a series of playful exercises designed to help you discover an image or images from your life that sustain you. And from these you will write a poem. No experience in poetry is needed, only a desire to be in company, experiment, and learn. This class repeats. Choose the date that works best for you.

Hermine Meinhard's book Bright Turquoise Umbrella, published by Tupelo Press, was a finalist for the Poetry Society of America's Norma Farber First Book Award. Her poems have appeared in American Letters & Commentary, Barrow Street, Drunken Boat and Verse Daily among other publications and aired on public radio. She has read her work at venues such as Live at Prairie Lights Bookstore, Hudson Valley Writers Center, the Kitchen, KGB Bar, Cornelia Street Cafe and the Bowery Poetry Club and has been interviewed and profiled by the online journals Margin and Chicago Post Modern Poetry. Meinhard is a faculty member of NYU's School of Professional Studies and a member of New York Writers Workshop. She has an MFA in poetry from Sarah Lawrence College.
