Considered avant-garde at the time of its invention in the early 20th century by Swiss musician Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, the Dalcroze Method teaches movement in time to music, from Mozart minuets to jazz improvisations. Participants walk and turn, stay in step with changing tempos, shift their weight and balance, handle objects while walking, and make exaggerated body movements. For seniors, Dalcroze can improve balance and reduce the risk of falling. In a recent study, elderly people cut their risk of falling by more than half after taking classes in Dalcroze Eurhythmics
