Tamara Fish and Ruth Messinger hope to engage with themselves, with each other and the participants to look at some of the roots of race division and racism in the United States; some of the current challenges we face as these issues manifest in our society, in our city, in our Jewish community and in our own lives; and some of the work we can and should be doing to make change.  There will be some articles recommended for reading between class meetings, and a larger reading list will be provided.

About the instructors:

Tamara Fish (Harvard, A.B.; Columbia, M.Phil.) is the president of the Jewish Multiracial Network (JMN) and a former Asst. Dir. of the Office of the University Chaplain at Columbia Univ.  A gleefully recovering academe who was once a professor of religion at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY, Tamara converted to Judaism midway through her New Testament Studies doctoral program. Tamara is also the immediate past president of Congregation Tehillah in Riverdale, NY, and served on its board for six years. She is currently an active member of two synagogues: Congregation Tehillah and Congregation Ansche Chesed, NYC. A consummate educator, Tamara enjoys helping synagogues, seminars, boards and workshops acquire practical methods for actively including Jews of Color, and facilitating constructive conversations about race in Jewish communities.

Ruth W. Messinger is the Social Justice Activist in Residence at the JCC Center for Social Responsibility. She serves as Global Ambassador for American Jewish World Service, as organization she ran from 1998-2016; is the Social Justice Fellow at The Jewish Theological Seminary of America; is a consultant and teacher for the Jewish Women’s Foundation of New York and the Jewish Social Justice Round Table; and has recently completed the development of a social justice curriculum for Melton Schools. Previously Ruth was in elected office in New York City for 20 years.
