Program Descriptions – Summer 2019

 

PS 163, 163 West 97th St (between Amsterdam and Columbus Ave.)

Literacy and Math Program:
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays
8:30am – 11:30am
July 8th – August 8th

Volunteers tutor elementary school students who are struggling to meet reading and math standards. Volunteer tutors will receive on-site supervision by a JCC reading specialist and a JCC math teacher, who will give a lesson to the group and provide lesson plans to guide the volunteers in their one-on-one work with their students during each session.

Enrichment Program:
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays
11:30am – 12:30 pm
July 8th – August 8th

Volunteers share their talent with small groups of students [grades 1-5]. Enrichment activities may include arts & crafts, yoga, crocheting, chess, etc… Volunteers with no particular talent to share are encouraged to participate by helping the facilitator and students during the enrichment period and lunch.

 

West Side Neighborhood Commons, 696 Amsterdam Ave. (between 93rd and 94th St.)

Evening Tutors:
Mondays and/or Wednesdays (choose your day(s))
6:00 – 7:00 pm
July 8th – August 7th

Volunteers use informational texts to help struggling readers in Grades 1-5 develop reading comprehension and writing skills.

 

Acacia/DHS Shelter, Midtown Manhattan

Evening Tutors:
Tuesdays and/or Thursdays (choose your day(s))
3:30 – 5:00 pm
July 9th – August 8th

Volunteers use informational texts to help struggling readers in Grades 1-5 develop reading comprehension and writing skills.

 

MS 54, 103 W. 107th St.

Afternoon Tutoring (Short Term):
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
12:30 – 2:00 pm
July 29th – 31st

Volunteers work with incoming 6th graders to prepare for the rigors of middle school by helping them complete their summer homework packets.
